There are 5 main reasons your curl doesn’t stick around. Here are some tricks to help!
- TYPE OF IRON
Professional irons tend to conduct heat better, last longer and have temperature control settings. They are also made of tourmaline, platinum and ceramic materials which fend to be less damaging to hair. Our favorite is the BioIonic long barrel 1 ¼” styling iron because the larger size allows you to work through the hair much more quickly and it only takes a few seconds to beat up. We rarely recommend clients exceed 360-380 degrees when using any curling iron or straightener.
- HEAT PROTECTANT
Stylists tend to use and recommend heat activated setting sprays. Why is this a good idea? First off, it's like a heat shield for your hair - to protect fragile strands from having direct heat. Secondly, it's specially formulated to respond with heat to lock in styles without making them hairspray crusty. Our stylists go to is Amika The Sheild. It protects hair from heat styling- 450° f/ 230°c heat, blocks strands from pesky, sticky humidity and maintains frizz-free styles - hairstyles are clinically proven to last for 24 hours.
- SECTIONING
It's important to make sure you're working with the right amount of hair at a time. Too much and the curl won't hold. Too little and it'll be too curly. Great rule to follow is to take a section a little less than the size of the heated portion of the tool.
- LET IT COOL
- If you're going for a more relaxed style, let the curl cool down in its natural fall, but don’t touch it! Let it be and you will have longer lasting curls with less frizz. Either way - don’t touch until it’s all cool!
- If you’re going for a more formal style, utilize styling clips to clip up the curl while it’s cooling off. This will ensure your curl stays extremely bouncy and does not fall out easily.
- PRE-PREP
Start by applying a styling product designed to enhance curl hold, such as mousse or curl enhancing cream, to damp hair. We love Kerastase Densifique Mousse. These products provide a foundation for the curl to adhere to and can help maintain its shape throughout the day.
