Things your stylist wish more people knew

As hairstylists, we absolutely love making people feel confident, beautiful, and refreshed. But there are a few things we secretly wish more clients knew — not because we’re judging, but because it would make your experience (and results!) even better.

Let’s start with a common myth: dirty hair is not better for color. That old saying about color "grabbing better" on dirty hair simply isn't true. In fact, product buildup, dry shampoo, and oil can create a barrier that makes it harder for color to process evenly — especially with blonding or lightening services. For the best results, we actually recommend clean, dry hair with minimal product. It allows us to work on a fresh canvas and gives your color the best chance of turning out beautifully.

Another big one: if you’ve used box dye — even once — please tell us. We're not judging you for it. Even if it was months or years ago, that color is still sitting in your hair, and it matters for what we’re doing now. Full transparency helps us avoid unwanted tones, prevent damage, and come up with a game plan that’s safe for your hair and gives you what you’re actually looking for.

Speaking of that dream hair — it might not happen in one session. And that’s completely okay. Whether you’re going from dark to light, aiming for lived-in dimension, or correcting years of color, beautiful and healthy results take time. Rushing the process can lead to disappointment or damage. Your stylist isn’t just trying to “drag it out” — we’re building something customized and long-lasting. Trust the process — we’re in it together.

And once you do have that dream color or cut, how you treat your hair at home is everything. The truth is, your hair only sees us a few times a year — but it sees your products, tools, and towels every single day. Using salon-quality shampoo, applying heat protectant, brushing gently, sleeping on a silk pillowcase — all of these things make a massive difference in the health and longevity of your color and style. Healthy hair is a team effort, and we love when clients invest in the results we work so hard to create.

Let’s also talk about communication. We genuinely want you to love your hair. If something isn’t feeling right — whether it’s during the service or after — speak up! We’d much rather have an honest conversation and fix something than have you leave feeling unsure. We're not mind readers (as much as we try), and your feedback helps us learn your preferences, comfort zones, and long-term goals.

At the end of the day, your stylist is your hair’s biggest fan. We celebrate your wins, listen to your stories, and truly care about how you feel when you leave the chair. We don’t gatekeep good hair — we’re here to educate, support, and collaborate with you on your journey.

So here’s your friendly reminder: great hair takes trust, time, and teamwork. We're not just here to do your hair — we're here to help you love it. The more open, honest, and prepared you are, the more amazing your results will be.
